- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 to 4.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg (beaten)
- coarse salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Add sugar, salt, and flour; mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
- Divide the dough into pieces and shape into pretzels.
- Boil water with baking soda, then dip each pretzel for 30 seconds.
- Place on baking sheet, brush with egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
Notes
- For a sweeter pretzel, add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar after baking.
- Ensure the water is not too hot when activating the yeast.
