Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • ⅓ cup baking soda
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • Coarse salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  3. Add flour and salt, and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes.
  4. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions.
  6. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.
  7. Prepare a baking soda bath by dissolving baking soda in boiling water and dip each pretzel for 30 seconds.
  8. Place the pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.

Notes

  • Serve warm with mustard or cheese dip.
  • For a sweeter version, try adding cinnamon sugar on top after baking.
