- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- ⅓ cup baking soda
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Coarse salt (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt, and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes.
- Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions.
- Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.
- Prepare a baking soda bath by dissolving baking soda in boiling water and dip each pretzel for 30 seconds.
- Place the pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.
Notes
- Serve warm with mustard or cheese dip.
- For a sweeter version, try adding cinnamon sugar on top after baking.
