Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt; mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C).
  6. After dough has risen, divide it into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a rope.
  7. Shape the ropes into pretzels.
  8. Dissolve baking soda in hot water and dip each pretzel in the solution for 30 seconds.
  9. Place the pretzels on a baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle coarse salt on top.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy!
