- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger

- ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup molasses
- 1 cup hot water
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
- In another large bowl, beat the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the molasses.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients and hot water, mixing until smooth.
- Pour the batter into a greased and floured cake pan.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool before frosting.
- For the frosting, combine powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and cinnamon in a bowl and mix in enough water to reach desired consistency.
- Spread the frosting over the cooled cake and enjoy!

- For a richer flavor, let the cake sit overnight before serving.
